Hotel history

The outdoor recreation center
One spring day in the early 1930s, Hjalmar Fagerström stepped off the train in Mullsjö to begin his new job as stationmaster at the small station house on the South Swedish Highlands. People from Gothenburg had long been drawn to the area to enjoy the excellent skiing terrain and reliable snow conditions. As a true nature enthusiast, Hjalmar saw the region’s potential and decided to build an outdoor recreation center. He began by founding the Mullsjö branch of the Swedish Outdoor Association in 1936. In 1939, the first ski lodge was built, accommodating 34 overnight guests. Ski trails and slalom slopes were cleared, and tennis courts, a sports field, and a bathing facility were constructed. Guests poured in—families, sports teams, conference attendees—and soon the lodge became too small. In 1944, the next step was taken: a major expansion with the construction of a new main building featuring a dining hall, lounge, and guest rooms for 70 people. With Hjalmar’s keen eye for color and design, the facility blended harmoniously into its surroundings of forest, lake, and hills.

The hotel develops
In 1967, Tord Fagerström took over from his father. Course activities dominated and continued to grow. Private guests arrived on weekends, during winter breaks, and in the summer. The facility was modernized and rebuilt. As early as 1988, it was time for another major investment, and the assignment went to architect Carl Nyrén, one of Sweden’s foremost architects. The building became a unique creation with color and form, a marble pool, a beautiful and spacious course room filled with light, Nordic-designed guest rooms, and a fitness room. Development continued with a strong focus on conference activities, offering a variety of programs, a well-regarded kitchen, and experienced staff.
In September 1999, the latest expansion was inaugurated, giving the hotel an entirely new “front.” This included a new entrance, luggage room, cloakroom, restrooms, reception, bar, dining room, and a new conference hall.
The hotel up to the present day
In August 2004, the hotel was sold to the well-known local restaurateur and hotel owner Josef Darius, who already owned Gyllene Uttern in Gränna and Hotel Ullinge between Eksjö and Nässjö. The hotel was then operated by the German Ziegler family under the name Hotel Mullsjö.
In 2021, the hotel was purchased by Katarina Kvarnström and Peter Lundberg, who also run Björkhaga Hotel & Conference in Mullsjö. The hotel was then renamed Mullsjö Hotel & Conference.
