One spring day in the early 1930s, Hjalmar Fagerström got off the train in Mullsjö to begin his job as stationmaster in the small station house in the highlands of southern Sweden. People from Gothenburg had long been coming here to enjoy the excellent skiing terrain and plentiful snow. As a true nature lover, Hjalmar recognized the area’s potential and decided to build a recreational center. He began by founding the Mullsjö chapter of Friluftsfrämjandet in 1936. In 1939, the first ski lodge was built, with room for 34 guests. They cleared ski trails and slalom runs, built tennis courts, a sports field, and a swimming facility. Guests flocked to the area—families, sports teams, and conference attendees—and soon the lodge became too small. In 1944, the next step was taken. A major undertaking, to be precise, as a new main building was constructed with a dining hall, lounge, and guest rooms for 70 people. Thanks to Hjalmar’s keen eye for color and design, the facility blended seamlessly into its surroundings of forest, lake, and mountains.
